Flake epoxy coating is a type of flooring system that combines epoxy resin with decorative flakes or chips to create a durable, attractive surface.
Flake Epoxy Coating
1. Surface Preparation
Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the surface to remove any dirt, grease, oil, or contaminants. This is typically done using a degreaser and cleaning solutions.
Grinding/Shot Blasting: Mechanically abrade the surface using a floor grinder or shot blaster to ensure proper adhesion of the epoxy. This also helps to create a smooth and even surface.
Repairing: Fill any cracks, holes, or imperfections with an appropriate filler or epoxy patching compound.
2. Priming
Application of Primer: Apply a primer coat of epoxy resin to the prepared surface. The primer helps to seal the substrate and improve the adhesion of subsequent layers. It is usually applied with a roller or brush.
3. Base Coat
Mixing the Epoxy: Mix the two components of the epoxy resin (resin and hardener) according to the manufacturer's instructions. Proper mixing is crucial for the epoxy to cure correctly.
Applying the Base Coat: Apply the mixed epoxy resin to the primed surface using a roller or squeegee. This base coat serves as the foundation for the flake application.
4. Broadcasting the Flakes
Choosing Flakes: Select the desired color and size of decorative flakes. These flakes come in various colors, sizes, and blends to achieve different aesthetic effects.
Broadcasting the Flakes: While the base coat is still wet, broadcast the flakes evenly across the surface by hand or using a spreader. The goal is to cover the surface completely with flakes, ensuring uniform distribution.
5. Curing
Curing Time: Allow the base coat and flakes to cure according to the manufacturer's recommendations. This typically takes several hours to overnight, depending on the specific epoxy product and environmental conditions.
6. Scraping and Vacuuming
Scraping: Once the epoxy has cured, scrape off any loose or protruding flakes using a metal scraper or blade to create a smooth surface.
Vacuuming: Vacuum the surface to remove any loose flakes and debris.
7. Top Coat
Mixing the Top Coat: Mix the two components of the clear epoxy or polyurethane top coat.
Applying the Top Coat: Apply the top coat over the flake-covered surface using a roller or squeegee. This clear coat seals the flakes in place, provides a glossy finish, and adds an extra layer of protection.
Optional Second Top Coat: In some cases, a second top coat may be applied for added durability and shine.
Vacuuming: Vacuum the surface to remove any loose flakes and debris.
8. Final Curing
Curing Time: Allow the top coat to cure completely before allowing any foot or vehicle traffic on the surface. This may take a few days, depending on the product and environmental conditions.
9. Inspection and Maintenance
Inspection: Inspect the finished floor for any imperfections or areas that may need touch-up.
Maintenance: Regular cleaning and maintenance will help preserve the appearance and longevity of the flake epoxy coating. This typically involves sweeping, mopping, and occasional re-sealing if necessary.
